Brett Hartenbach has been a professional musician and singer/songwriter for more than 35 years, playing and singing in concert halls, clubs, colleges and festivals throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Northeast Performer referred to Hartenbach as a “human fake book” because of his vast knowledge of and ability to play material from various genres, as well as the number of songs he can perform at a moment’s notice. In addition to being guitarist and music director for indie pop icon Daniel Johnston, Brett is an accomplished producer and singer-songwriter. He also serves as the bandleader for Rock My Soul. His first CD, Frame from a Bad Movie, was released in 2008, and a new CD, Everything's OK ... If You Look at It That Way, a compilation of Brett's songs done by various musicians across the country, will be released in May 2012.
Brett has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the US and abroad, including NYC’s legendary Bottom Line, the Newport Folk Festival, the Edmonton Folk Festival, the Boston Folk Festival, the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, Mountain Stage, the Austin City Limits Festival, Woodsongs, First Avenue (Minneapolis), the Indian Summer Festival in Glasgow, Vicar Street (Dublin), Union Chapel (London), the Henry Ford Theater (LA), the Old Town School of Music (Chicago), the Laneway Festival (Australia), Cambridge’s famed Club Passim and Breminale in Bremen, Germany. He has also shared the stage with such notables as Ellis Paul, Mary Lou Lord, Teddy Thompson, Robert Crenshaw (Marshall Crenshaw Band), Eddie from Ohio, Susan Werner, Garnet Rogers, Girlyman, Kris Delmhorst, Mark Erelli, Josh Ritter, Bill Lloyd of Foster and Lloyd, and R.E.M. producer Don Dixon.
Throughout the course of his career, Brett has worked in various duos and groups, as well as performing on his own. As an accompanist, he is said to be a “singer’s dream.” In recent years he has traveled extensively worldwide, performing and collaborating with cult icon Daniel Johnston and Boston-based singer-songwriter Rachael Davis, as well as with Dawn Boyer and Rock My Soul.
Brett’s guitar can be heard on recordings by various artists, including Daniel Johnston, Rachael Davis, T.S. Baker, Dawn Boyer and Rock My Soul, to name a few. He also appears in “The Angel and Daniel Johnston: Live at Union Chapel” DVD, which was released in 2009.
Brett has produced or co-produced recordings by Daniel Johnston (The EP “Laurie” [U.K. Top Ten] was Melody Maker’s “Single of the Week”), chromatic harpist Ben Brown, singer-songwriter Kevin Henry, Seacoast-based singer-songwriter Richard Gsottschneider, two discs by the gospel group Rock My Soul, and Rock My Soul’s lead soloist Dawn Boyer, and the Roots/Americana band Wooden Eye. "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round," from Rock My Soul's debut, which Brett produced, was featured prominently in the 2009 PBS/BBC documentary, Freedom Songs: The Music of the Civil Rights Movement.
